Chris-Marine’s cylinder condition monitoring reporting service
We know that time is limited for the crew members operating today’s vessels. This is why we have made a great effort in developing user-friendly tools that make data collection straight-forward. However, interpreting the data can be more difficult. Chris-Marine has therefore
introduced a cost-effective reporting service that allows customers to collect data on their own and send it to Chris-Marine for processing. Chris-Marine reverts with a report summarizing the findings and comparing the results to other engines of similar type.
A report can include:
replica imprints collected through scavenge air port. This method is especially useful when changing from high-S fuel oil to low-S fuel oil after 2020.
Efficient engine parts cleaning
Efficient and careful engine parts cleaning and cleaning fuel system is important for the performance of any engine. Chris-Marine supplies a wide range of cleaning systems to facilitate the cleaning process for maintenance crews onboard ships, in power plants and at workshops. We offer two different cleaning methods: ultrasonic cleaning and spray cleaning:
Ultrasonic cleaning fuel system
The ultrasonic cleaning fuel systems have transducers generating ultrasound waves. The waves vibrate the cleaning fluid at very high velocity, thereby creating a superior cavitation process. Inside the stainless-steel cleaning tank millions of tiny bubbles implode within the cleaning solution and penetrate every orifice of the item being cleaned, removing various contaminants.
Chris-Marine’s ultrasonic cleaning range covers the cleaning of engine parts like valve spindles, fuel injectors, filters, intercoolers, pistons, heat exchangers and cylinder heads.
Spray cleaning
Our spray cleaning fuel system provides excellent cleaning results thanks to a smart design used together with heat, high spray pressures and liquid flow rates achieved by the built-in pump. The spray system rotates around a fixed load giving a perfect cleaning result together with a very easy loading- and unloading system.
SWM, the Chris-Marie spray washing machine efficiently handles cleaning of small and medium sized engine components such as pistons, piston rings, valve spindles, fuel injectors, cylinder heads, intercoolers, and heat exchangers.
Cleaning chemicals
To get the very best cleaning results, appropriate cleaning chemicals should be used. Chris-Marine offers types of cleaning chemicals to suit different cleaning needs; Ultra Rinse Engine, Ultra Rinse Intercooler and Ultra Rinse Descale.
Ultra Rinse Engine
Ultra Rinse Engine is a high alkaline cleaning chemical suitable for challenging cleaning tasks. It is ideal for cleaning steel, stainless steel and cast-iron components that have been exposed to heavy fuel oil. It efficiently removes fuel, coke, soot and paint.
Ultra Rinse Intercooler
Ultra Rinse Intercooler is a high alkaline cleaning chemical suitable for cleaning of metals like aluminum, titanium, brass and copper. This makes it particularly efficient for cleaning of intercoolers and turbo parts.
Ultra Rinse Descale
Ultra Rinse Descale is an acidic liquid concentrate based on highly efficient surfactants and inhibitors. This cleaning chemical is often used to remove lime scale, iron deposits, carbon deposits and oil deposits from engine parts.
Chris-Marine offers complete solutions for diesel and gas engine maintenance to cut downtime and save costs. Our extensive Grinding & Machining portfolio has been developed to overhaul and restore cylinder heads, cylinder liners and sealing surfaces.
Cylinder Heads
Grinding and machining of cylinder heads according to engine makers’ specifications is very important as failure to maintain the condition of cylinder heads means jeopardizing engine performance. This could become a very costly affair. The good news is that there is a variety of machines available to make maintenance accurate and efficient.
Chris-Marine offers a range of high-quality maintenance machines and tools to help customers keep their cylinder liners in top condition. There are products for 2-stroke and 4-stroke cylinder heads. Some products are pneumatically driven and others electrically driven. Some are portable while others are on the heavier side.
However, what they all have in common is that they are of high quality, and fulfilling engine makers’ specifications. As a result our customers can cut costs and avoid unnecessary down-time.

Cylinder Liners
Our extensive range of Grinding & Machining equipment for restoration and overhaul of 2-stroke and 4-stroke cylinder liners includes honing & deglazing machines, as well as machines for wave cut grinding and wear edge milling. We offer machines for honing in-situ or in a honing rig. Our ceramic honing stones and diamond honing stones are of great quality. Together with our honing liquid that prevents residues from clogging the stones, they ensure an efficient honing process. To facilitate the honing process we also have honing rigs and piston ring expanders in our product portfolio.
Why honing of cylinder liners?
The honing process rectifies longitudinal and circumferential surface geometry, thus restoring the cylinder liner’s oil retaining surface properties. Honing is vital to prolong the lifetime of cylinder liners and avoid running-in problems. If honing isn’t performed regularly there is a risk that the maximum wear limit provided by the engine makers won’t be reached before cylinder condition issues occur. Some common cylinder condition problems are broken piston rings and cylinder scuffing.
Honing results
The honing result depends on several process parameters such as honing speed, stone pressure, and number of strokes for each stage. Different types of stones are used throughout the process and up to five surface roughness parameters and several more geometrical parameters should be within a pre-specified range at the end of the honing process. This means that monitoring and controlling the process is challenging also for quite experienced users. Chris-Marine has therefore developed the Chris-Marine Honing App, a tool intended to make it easier to monitor and control the honing process, thereby improving quality while also saving time.
Sealing Surfaces
Grinding and machining of sealing surfaces according to engine makers’ specifications is very important as failure to do so means jeopardizing engine performance. Lower engine performance and possible down-time is costly and should be avoided. The good news is that there is a variety of machines available to make maintenance accurate and efficient.
